Aleris AlMgSc technology offers aerospacemanufacturers signifi cant weight savingsopportunities. In a 1:1 exchange, or drop-in, Aleris alloy AA5028 H116 offers a 4 to5 percentweight advantage compared to conventionalAA2024. The exceptional weldability of AA5028,offers further weight savings. With AlMgScsheet, stringer reinforced aircraft fuselagecomponents can be Laser Beam Welded(LBW) or Friction Stir Welded (FSW) whenthe individual parts are still fl at, without anyprior treatment. Creep forming the materialat elevated temperatures can achieve thesingle or double curvature of the fuselagepart required for the aircraft body. Using thismethod, there is no distortion or spring backof the material, thus enabling a high precisionand cost-effective production process. Ascompared to stretch forming, no clampingallowance is required, which improves thebuy-to-fl y ratio. Even for traditionally riveteddesigns AlMgSc sheets can be roll-formedwith subsequent attachment of any kind ofstringer material.
APPLICATION
AlMgSc low density sheets are recommendedfor use as fuselage skin sheet with mediumstrength but excellent damage toleranceand corrosion properties. This material canpotentially replace traditionally used 2xxxalloys such as 2024 T3 as a drop-in solutionwithout change of the structural design. Thematerial is supplied in bare condition.
ADVANTAGES OF AlMgSc SHEET
• low density• exceptional weldability
• excellent damage tolerance
• good corrosion resistance
• creep-formable
• thermally stable
• easy-to-recycle
AVAILABILITY
AlMgSc sheets are typically produced ingauges between 1.6 and 7.0 mm (0.063 and0.275 in) and supplied in annealed condition.Other dimensions as well as a material safetydata sheet are available upon request.
